Are You Building Goodwill With Your Clients?

Early in the morning Tom was eating breakfast when his cell phone rang.  Tom is a saleman for an industrial supply company and on the phone was regular but small customer.  He asked if Tom would come to his factory to look at a problem he was having with one of the machines.  When Tom got to the factory the client took him over to the machine.  From the sound of it Tom thought that one of the bearing had gone out.  Well he took off his jacket and removed his tie and up went his sleeves as he helped the client take apart the machine for further inspection.  Well the machine was full of heavy grease and the customer said "Tom you'll get filthy!" Tom said it didn't bother him as that's what they make soap for as he continued his work.  It turns out the bearing were indeed crapola shot and had to be replaced.  Tom explained to his customer that his company didn't carry those ball bearings so he gave the client the number to a competitor that could fill  that order.  The customer thanked Tom for his help, and he walked out the door.  Tom had to make a few more stops before he returned to the office.  When he sat down at his desk his manager came over to speak with him.  He said "Tom, when you were out an order came in for a set of bearings for that customer you saw this morning"  Tom was confused but his boss continued, "The client wants you to order this from the company you told him to buy from and then resell it to him, he wants to make sure you get the credit for the sale and your full commission. Tom, I don't know what you said to him but keep up the good work." That's when Tom realized that going out of your way to help clients builds good will, and in the long run can really pay off.  Keep learning everyday and soon you will become a successful salesperson.
