On the job you're a salesperson, but almost every day of your life you become a customer too. Whenever you're in a buying situation, you can learn a lot if you keep your eye's open.
A professional salesperson is always looking for ways to improve his or her selling techniques. Since sellers are also buyers, studying the people who sell to them is an excellent opportunity to learn.
How do the people you buy from sell to you? What do they do that you might be able to use in your own selling? And where do they fall down?
Whenever you're on the buying end, observe the salesperson who is selling to you. And when you recognize a good sales technique, add it to your arsenal.
Someone once said that you should learn from the mistakes of others, because you won't live ling enough to make them all yourself. That's good advice.
You can learn not only from the successful sales you observe, but the failures as well. What did the salesman do to turn you off? How did he lose the sale? Are you guilty of any of the things he did?
It's easier to spot someone else's mistake than to notice your own. But don't be too quick to assume you don't make the same ones. A professional salesperson is always on the lookout for ways to improve.
Do you have a favorite store or salesclerk you patronize? What is it about him or her that keeps you coming back? It may be worth your time to think about it.
Can you remember how you started to deal with this sales clerk in the first place? How did they win your confidence? What kind of attitude do they have? How do they treat you?
This person has established the kind of reputation with you that you'd like to have with all your customers. There must be reasons for their success. Can you find them and put them to use?
Always keep your eyes and ears open when someone is selling to you. Observe and analyze whether you're the buyer, sell, or just an observer. Then copy the good you see and try to eliminate the bad.
